Taking a SUP lesson is the best way to have a great first experience if you are new to the sport. A lesson is also the best way to get the most from your new board. If you own a board I always recommend taking the lesson on your own equipment so you get to know it even better.
Reasons to take a lesson include,
Learn how to properly turn, navigate, and stop your board
Learn a more powerful stroke that will move you with greater ease and improve your balance in choppier conditions
Gain the confidence to take your board out in a group or rent in new locations
Confidence in more weather and wave conditions
Proper safety considerations including getting on and off your board and self rescue
When it's safe to go out and when it isn't
